Modi to inaugurate Bangladesh-India ‘Maitri Setu’ today

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the ‘Maitri Setu’ (Friendship Bridge) connecting India and Bangladesh on the Feni River. The bridge connects Bangladesh with India’s Tripura border.

The bridge will be inaugurated via video conference at 12:00 pm on Tuesday. This information has been obtained from the Indian Prime Minister’s office on Monday. It is learned that the 1.9-km long bridge will connect India’s Sabroom with Ramgarh borderline with Khagrachari.

The bridge is expected to open new doors for trade, commerce, tourism, employment, imports and exports, as well as the economy between the two countries.

A statement from the Indian Prime Minister’s Office said the inauguration of the bridge would make Tripura a “gateway to the North East” for entry into Bangladesh’s Chattogram port. It is located just 80-km from the Sabroom edge.

The bridge will facilitate the movement of goods and passengers between the two countries, create new market opportunities from the northeastern states and facilitate the smooth movement of passengers from India and Bangladesh, the statement added.
