7 injured in clash between JU students, locals

At least seven students were injured in a clash between locals and students of Jahangirnagar University in Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka at around 7pm, today.

The incident took place this evening when residents of the areas adjacent to the university, armed with locally made weapons, gathered after being called over loud speakers of the area's mosques.

They then locked in a clash with the students, leaving at least seven students injured, while several vehicles including motorcycles and some shops in the area were vandalized.

It is learned that on February 11, some local youths got into broil with the university students over playing cricket tournaments. The locals vandalized and burnt four motorcycles of the university students this afternoon. Then around 7:30 pm, the locals attacked the university students. Upon receiving the news, the police came and threw tear shells to disperse them.

JU Proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan told media that the situation is now much calmer. Our students are located inside the campus. And I am trying to rescue those who are trapped in different houses in Gerua. Police also came to the spot. We are trying to normalize the situation through them.
