Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh ITO Naoki today handed over commemorative coins to Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Bangladesh.

Japan recognised Bangladesh as a sovereign nation on February 10 in 1972. Japan Mint, an independent administrative institution of the Japanese government responsible for producing and circulating the coins of Japan,

in collaboration with Bangladesh Bank, minted 13,000 pieces of Tk 50 denominated commemorative silver coins and delivered 3,000 coins to Bangladesh. The round-shaped coins are 35 mm in diameter and weigh 20 grammes each. The head of the coin is inscribed with the '50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan-Bangladesh Diplomatic Relations' logo,

Cherry Blossom (National Flower of Japan) and Water Lily (National Flower of Bangladesh) using color printing technology. The National Martyr's Memorial, Bangladesh's Liberation War monument, is designed on the tail. ''I am delighted that Japan has delivered the commemorative coins to Bangladesh on this auspicious occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The coins designed with Cherry Blossoms and Water Lily symbolise our long-lasting friendship. We hope that the commemorative coins will be seen by many people and contribute to further strengthening our friendly relations,'' said ITO Naoki, ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh.

"It is our pleasure to receive the commemorative coins from Japan. I am sure the coins will help further strengthen the friendly relations between Bangladesh and Japan', said Fazle Kabir, governor of Bangladesh Bank. The coins will be sold at Bangladesh Bank's Motijheel Office and at Taka Museum in Mirpur from tomorrow.
