Garment workers protest in Gazipur for increasing EID Holidays

Eid is coming. Everyone has aim to joy, there is spirits in the mind. Everyone has a desire to go from city to village and share that joy and spirit with their relatives. But not all garment workers are getting that opportunity. As a result, workers of a garment factory in Gazipur have blocked the highway and staged a protest demanding extension of Eid holidays.

Workers of Safa Sweater Limited of Palmal Group came down on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Hotapara in Sadar on Sunday afternoon.

During this time, traffic jams occurred in a few kilometers on both sides of the highway. About half an hour later, when the factory authorities announced an extension of three days, they left the road. The traffic started.

Factory workers Sohail Rana and Bulbul Ahmed said the authorities announced a seven-day holiday on Sunday at the factory on the occasion of Eid. Another organization of the same group has announced  10-day holiday For EID festivals.

Bulbul Ahmed said, “We have also requested the authorities to extend the three-day leave. But to no avail. Eventually, the workers were forced to join the protest movement around 3:30 pm on Sunday. The authorities later accepted the demand. ”

The general manager of this factory, Nurshed Alam said the factory has a lot of works to do. So the workers were given seven days off on Eid. Later, it was decided to extend the leave for another three days to bring the situation under control.

Joydebpur Police Station OC Abdullah Al Mamun said traffic was disrupted when factory workers took up position on the highway. Later, when the factory workers agreed to their demands, they left the road and the traffic started moving.
