BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release has extended for another six months by postponing her sentence. However, she will not be able to go abroad at this time.Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal confirmed the information to the media on Monday.

The Home Minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had approved a proposal to suspend Khaleda Zia’s sentence for another six months. 

Earlier on March 8, the Ministry of Law sent a file to the Ministry of Home Affairs, extending Khaleda Zia’s release for six months by postponing her sentence. 

The Ministry of Law also expressed its views on maintaining the “previous conditions” for extending the sentence.According to the previous decision, Khaleda Zia’s six-month release term in the second phase will end on March 24.

Khaleda Zia’s sentence has been suspended for six months under subsection 1 of section 401 of the Criminal Procedure Code and she is being released on the condition that she receives specialized treatment in the country. During this, she will not be able to leave the country.

On March 2, the family filed a petition with the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking Khaleda Zia’s release. Khaleda Zia’s younger brother Shamim Eskander made the request after meeting Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan.The petition mentioned extending the suspension of Khaleda Zia’s sentence, waiving her condition and sending her abroad.

Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in prison on February 8, 2018, in a Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. On October 30, the High Court extended the sentence by five years on appeal. 

On October 29 of the same year, the same court sentenced Khaleda Zia to seven years rigorous imprisonment in a Zia Charitable Trust graft case. Besides 7-year imprisonment, Khaleda Zia was also fined Tk 10 lakh and ordered another six months imprisonment for non-payment of the fine.
