A female sophomore student of Dhaka University (DU) has been reportedly raped by an unknown man or men in Dhaka.

The incident happened at Kurmitola area on Sunday evening.

Police and her fellow classmates said the girl left the campus in a DU bus for her friend's place at Khilkhet's Shewra area and mistakenly got down at Kurmitola around 7pm.

An unknown man gagged her from behind and took her to an isolated place, where she became unconscious. Later, she was raped and physically tortured, they said quoting the girl.

They also said the girl regained her consciousness around 10pm and discovered herself in the isolated place. She hired a vehicle and went to her friend's place.

On information, her friend and classmates took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around midnight.

The girl was admitted to the hospital's One Stop Crisis Centre, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.

Forensic report

DMCH Director Brig Gen AKM Nasiruddin said a seven-member medical board, headed by Gynecology Prof Salma Rouf, has been formed to ensure her better treatment.

Her physical condition is stable now, however, she is mentally traumatized, he added.

On Monday, evidence of rape has been found after the primary examination, confirmed the DMCH head of Forensics Sohel Mahmud.

He added: "We have found several scratch marks on her neck, which point to the fact of her resistance against the incident.

"Other DNA samples have been sent for re-examination to confirm the number of perpetrators."

DU authorities' reaction

After being informed, DU authorities, few teachers, and her other classmates rushed to DMCH.

Pro-Vice Chancellor (education) Prof Nasrin Ahmad said: "This type of awful incidents has become very common nowadays. However, we rarely see justice being served and the incidents eventually get lost in time.

"The culprits of this incident should be brought under trial as soon as possible."

DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said: "The university authorities have filed a complaint with Shahbagh police station and the girl's father has filed a case with Cantonment police station."

"DU will provide all kind of support she needs," he added.

Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasan said: "The complaint has been forwarded to the respective (Cantonment) police station."
