Shots fired at Myanmar protests after warning; kills 16

Myanmar’s security forces shot and killed at least 50 protesters amid the military junta’s Armed Forces Day celebrations. The security forces carried out the attack while thousands of protesters took to the streets in Yangon, Mandalay and other towns, defying the warning of “shot in the head, back”, according to CNN.

At least four people were killed and 10 others were injured when security forces opened fire on protesters outside a police station in the Dala suburb of Yangon.

Three people have been shot in a protest in Insein, located in northern Yangon. A player of a local U-21 football team was also among the dead, said an eyewitness.

Local media reported that three people were killed in Lashio, Myanmar’s eastern city and four in the Bago region near Yangon. One protester was also shot dead in the northeastern town of Hopin.

“Today is a day of shame for the armed forces. Armed forces generals are celebrating Armed Forces Day after killing more than 300 innocent civilians,” said Dr. Sasa, a spokesman for CRPH, an anti-junta group set up by deposed lawmakers, told an online forum.

The death toll from the uprising that began in Myanmar on February 1 has already risen to nearly 350. As of Friday, the number was at 328, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), a Thai-based Myanmar watchdog group.
