The Indian government has sent back 10 Bangladeshi men and women to the country five years after they were detained in India through brokers. On Thursday (July 29) evening, the Petrapole Immigration Police of India handed them over to the Benapole Immigration Police on a special travel permit. Among them are seven men and three women.

The returnees are Russell Fakir (30), son of Shamsul Haque of Bagerhat district and his wife Ayesha Akhter (24), Nayan Haldar (24), Saju Chandra (30), Khokon Ali (28) and Rashel Hossain (29) of Moralganj upazila of the same district. Roxana Khatun, 18, daughter of Rabban Sheikh of Peroli village in Kalia upazila of Narail district, Mahmuda Akter, 23, daughter of Sultan Sikder of Poolerhat village in Jessore district, Sagar Hossain, 34, son of Khokon Ali of Khulna district and Golap Mia, 35, son of Chattar Miah of Habiganj district.

Rights Jessore and Justice and Care, two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have taken them to reach out to parents. Roxana Khatun, who returned, said she was trafficked to India in 2016 after falling into the clutches of brokers. After that, he was arrested by the police in 2016 while doing housework and went to jail. Mahmuda Khatun from Jessore said she went to India in 2016 with a passport.

He lost his passport there. Later, the police arrested him and sent him to jail as he did not have a passport. Sagar Hossain of Khulna said, “We were detained by the police while doing various activities there. After spending almost three years in jail, he returned to the country today. Jessore Rights Information Investigation Officer Taufiquzzaman said the victims fell into the clutches of brokers at different times and went to Bangalore in India through different borders of the country. Later, the police arrested them and sent them to court, where the court sentenced them to three to five years.

An NGO later rescued them and put them in a shelter home. He returned to the country through a special travel permit issued by the Indian government on Thursday. Ahsan Habib, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Benapole Checkpost Immigration, said seven men and three women were handed over to us by India's Petrapole Immigration Police through a travel permit. After the formalities, they were handed over to Benapole Port Police Station.

From there, two NGOs named Justice and Care and Rights Jessore received them. He added that since they returned to India, they would have to stay in 14 quarantines. They will then be handed over to their families
