Today Maharashtra police summoned Nupur Sharma, the suspended spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to record her statement over derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A case was registered against Nupur on May 28 for making the objectionable remarks following complaint lodged by Irfan Sheikh, joint secretary of Raza Academy, an Islamist group based in Maharashtra, reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting ANI.

Nupur was charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 505(2) (statements conducing to public mischief), police had said.

She was suspended from BJP's primary membership after the remarks sparked a massive controversy. BJP's Delhi media head Naveen Jindal was expelled as the party said his views on social media hampered communal harmony. Meanwhile, Nupur and her family were provided security by the Delhi Police today after she filed a complaint for allegedly being harassed and getting death threats.

Another complaint was received from Nupur against certain persons for promoting enmity between groups, after which Section 153A of Indian Penal Code was added to the case.
