The UN Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, has called on the Security Council to take immediate action to end military violence and restore democracy in the country.

The UN envoy made the call after a 26-year-old man was shot dead in Mandalay and an NLD official was stabbed to death in the Magway area.

Christine Schraner calls for joint action to end Myanmar’s military brutality. “Myanmar was heading for a major humanitarian catastrophe,” she said.

She said an exerted pressure would have to impose on the army to accept the November elections’ results. “We must stand by the people of Myanmar.”

The condemnation motion could not be passed due to the veto of China and Russia although UN Security Council has expressed concern over the situation in Myanmar.

Hundreds of engineers took to the streets in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, on Friday to protest against the coup. The city chanted slogans demanding the release of ousted state councilor Suu Kyi. The police directly shot to the throat of the protested 26-year-old youth, confirmed AFP, quoting the doctor.

Suu Kyi’s NLD politician and his relative were stabbed in the central Magway region. The 17-year-old relative survived, however, the politician died.

Police used tear gas to disperse the protested crowd in Dawei, located south of the city. Demonstrations have taken place in the commercial capitals of Yangon, Pathein and central Myingyan.

“I am afraid to stand in front of the protesters. But we have full confidence in the leaders. We are committed to saving each other,” a 27-year-old protester told AFP.

Thousands protested in the southeastern state of Kayin. The rally was led by the Kayin National Union (KNU), an indigenous organization. The militant group has long fought against Myanmar’s military.

In a statement, KNU said the army attack on peaceful protests would not be tolerated. Residents of remote areas, armed tribal organizations and the international community must work together to bring down the military dictatorship.
