This year, the first phase of the 57th Bishwa Ijtema will take place from January 10 to January 12

Thousands of devotes have started gathering on the banks of the Turag River in Tongi to take part in the first phase of the Bishwa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslim community in the world.

Although the first phase is expected to begin officially after Fazr prayers on Friday, Aam Bayan (general sermons) by noted scholars already began at the venue after Fazr prayers on Thursday.

This year, the first phase of the 57th Bishwa Ijtema will take place from January 10 to January 12. The second phase will take place from January 17 to January 19.

Devotes began arriving at the venue in buses and trucks from early hours of Thursday, braving the cold weather.

On behalf of the Ijtema preparation committee and the administration, the necessary field preparations works aiming to hold the Ijtema, is going on in full swing for the last one month.

The Ijtema preparation committee said all necessary preparations have been completed to hold the first phase successfully.  

The Akheri Munajat of the first phase will be held on January 12.

Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman told the media that the government has planned stringent security measures ahead of the Bishwa Ijtema.

“We have taken all out security measures for devotees including foreign arriving at the Ijtema ground, as the first phase of Bishwa Ijtema is scheduled to begin from January 10,” he said. 

He said various law enforcement agencies including police, RAB, BGB and Ansar will be deployed at the Ijtema ground and at the entry points of the venue areas, adding, “To ensure a peaceful and congenial atmosphere at the Ijtema grounds, the government has taken all-out security measures
